CDS Board and Committee News
At the fall board meeting in November, the board of directors held a board orientation session at which they reviewed The First Twenty Years: A History of the Community Development Society . The CDS Committees have been working up until the end of the year on different projects ranging from our annual conference in 2006 to the further development of our Action Networks. Below are a few committee highlights which were shared with the board of directors at the board meeting in St. Louis , MO.
Action Networks and Chapters:
Co-Chairs: Laura Filbert Zacher and Johanna Reed Adams
The committee continues its work on further development of action networks which were formed from previous CDS Sections in 2003. Action Networks can be formed by members of the Society around a common area of interest. The committee will focus on getting Action Networks integrated into the CDS Annual Conference as well as work with the existing Chapters.
Awards and Recognition
Chair: Pam Gibson
The contact information for the awards nominations has been updated and is available on the CDS website under About Us. In addition, the call for nominations has been published in the fall issue of the Vanguard Newsletter. Reminder postcards will be mailed to our membership after the first of the year. Deadline for nomination is March 1, 2006 .
Communications
Co-Chairs: Connie Coley Loden and Steven Lease
The committee has made progress on the communications plan of work developed last fall. The committee continues improvements with the website delivery as well as with the Vanguard and will discuss ways to effectively communicate with the membership.
Finance
Chair: Alan Kirk
The focus of the committee, the Endowment Fund had a balance $65,113.03 as of September 30, 2005 . The committee has been working on finding a community foundation to place the Endowment fund with, in hopes of strengthening the fund. The committee released a 2005 fall fundraising drive as well as conducted a fundraising drive during the annual conference via a silent and live auction.
International
Chair: Kathie Cram
The committee has been re-developed and provided the board with a new term of reference which includes long-term goals and immediate objectives. The long- term goals of the committee are to develop strong and productive inter-country communication, research, action, and project links amongst members of CDS and to assist in broadening the international participation in CDS.
The committee will place a focus on offering international members of the CDS the means to communicate effectively with their North American members as well as encouraging international presentation submittals for the conference.
Membership and Marketing
Chair: Jason Gray
The committee is working on a new tri-fold membership brochure which will showcase the “Make the Case” statement as well as other membership benefits which can be used to entice new and existing members. The committee will focus on specific member markets at the onset of this campaign.
Nominations and Leadership
Chair: Esther Farmer
The committee has begun the process of finding candidates for the 2006 election of the board of directors. In addition, this committee has been charged with the task of developing a leadership recognition program which will be integrated into the conference each year.
Program
Chair: Randy Adams
The committee has developed a call for proposals and set a deadline of October 31 st for all submittals. The committee received over 105 submitted presentations ranging from papers to panels to roundtable discussions. The committee will inform all participants of their acceptance by the end of the year. The committee expects to have room for approximately 75 presentations within the conference. The committee has confirmed that there will be an offsite event during the conference at the City Museum on Monday, June 26, 2006 .
Site Selection
Chair: Linda Sunde
The Site Selection Committee will refine the old bid package used for potential conference locations to reflect current realities and forward it with the understanding that this is the first step in the negotiation process. The committee is in current negotiations with the Wisconsin Rural Partners for a conference in Green Bay , Wisconsin in 2007, as well as with the Saskatoon CDS in Canada for the 2008 conference.
