2004 A Banner Year for CDS Endowment
The CDS Finance Committee is pleased to report that the CDS Endowment nearly doubled its assets in 2004. The Fund grew from $29,614 at the end of 2003 to $55,482 at the end of 2004. An aggressive fundraising campaign, contributed funds from several active and dissolved CDS chapters, and the generous contributions of CDS members are responsible for the phenomenal growth of this relatively new initiative by the Society. The Endowment received $25,597 in contributions, pledges and earnings this year, more money than the original funds from the Scholarship Trust that set up the Endowment.
Exceeding $50,000 in assets provides the Endowment with a critical milestone that will enable the CDS Finance Committee to explore ways in which the fund can be professionally managed and developed to earn greater returns. The possible use of a Community Foundation, which has the services of a financial manager for the investment of the funds, would still maintain CDS control over how the funds within the Endowment are used.
Another achievement in 2004 was the beginning of a new fund within the Endowment in memory of CDS founder and general counsel, George Nickolaus. CDS is grateful to the Nickolaus family, Mrs. Charlene Nickolaus, and the Missouri Chapter of CDS for initiating the planning of this fund with CDS. The purpose of the George Nickolaus CD Graduate Student Award will be to provide support for graduate students enrolled in MA/MS or PhD programs emphasizing community development at accredited four-year universities in the United States. To date the fund has $2,125 in assets.
All contributions to the Endowment are gratefully accepted. With your support we can assure that the Community Development Society remains active and vital, continuing to serve and support the field of community development well into the future. Contributions can be designated to a specific subcategory or fund within the Endowment, including the Annual Conference Fund, Diversity Fund, Scholarship Fund, Educational Materials Fund, Nickolaus Fund, or the Nette Nelson Travel Scholarship Fund.

2005 Capital Campaign Underway
All CDS members have received a letter from former President and Endowment Sub-Committee Chair, Ron Hustedde, regarding the 2005 Capital Campaign to double the Endowment. To date we have received donations and pledges totaling more than $2,000, a far cry from our goal. We can only achieve our goal if all CDS members contribute, so PLEASE SEND YOUR PLEDGE OR DONATION TODAY.
The CDS Business Office is located at 17 South High Street, Suite 200, Columbus, OH 43215 USA. Donations are tax deductible for United States residents. Please note that CDS is researching the tax deductibility of contributions to the Endowment from members who reside outside of the United States. (Continued) |
