Community Economic and Social Development
2005 Spring Institute

Sunday, June, 12 - Friday, June 17, 2005
9am - 5pm

The CESD Institute is comprised of 6-day intensive session that provides education and professional development for those already working in community development. Participants earn 3 university credits that may be applied towards a certificate in CESD and/or a degree in CESD.

*Please note that this institute is a university credited course.

The Spring Institute is a Professional Development opportunity.  It provides education and training in community economic and social development (CESD) with a special focus on small cities, towns and communities.

  • provides professional development for those working in community development
  • focus on development needs of smaller communities (population: 150,000 or less)
  • prepares for certification by the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers (CANDO) and the Economic Developers' Association of Canada (EDAC)
  • university course credits

Scheduled Courses

CESD1006:
Introduction to Community Economic and Social Development
This course provides an overview, introducing the main CESD concepts, themes, principles and values. It examines the context in which community development has emerged, including the impact of mainstream economic and social development on communities and the environment and the emergence of alternative approaches to economic and social. It includes the following units: what is 'community'; community development as process; the change agent's role in community development; community development principles and values.

Fee: $569.28 for Cdn Student, plus an application fee of $35.00 for new students

For students attending CESD 1006: Introduction to CESD, attendance at the course lab or "Learning Community" is a required component of the course and is integrated throughout the week.  The learning community is an opportunity for students to develop a cooperative approach to problem solving and working with the community; assists in the development of understanding group processes; and provides an opportunity for students to strengthen relationships with others.

CESD 2017:
Joint Ventures: Negotiating Successful Partnerships
Prerequisites :  Students must have completed CESD 1006, 1007 and 2006.
This objective of this course is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Joint ventures as a Community Economic Development (CED) strategy, particularly as it relates to Aboriginal communities.  Students will learn the required steps of completing a Joint Venture including the planning stage, maintaining a comprehensive communications strategy, through negotiations to conclusion.  Topics include researching, negotiating and structuring joint ventures.  Students will learn the key issues and challenges in managing a joint venture relationship effectively, including development of funding applications and business plans, and managing consultants. Lectures and case studies will be used, as well as guest speakers with experience in joint ventures.

Fee: $569.28 for Cdn Student

The CESD Spring Institute is located on the beautiful Algoma University College campus along the St. Mary's River in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario .  Algoma U emphasizes a personalized education with small class-sizes, and close interaction between students and faculty in a supportive friendly environment.

Weekly : *$200.00 (linen additional $40.00 ? must be requested)
