CDS Board and Committee News

The CDS Board of Directors recently held their Spring board meeting to discuss the governance and business of the Society. The main focus of the call was the upcoming 2006 conference for which all plans are being finalized. Below are additional committee highlights from the meeting.

Action Networks and Chapters:
Co-Chairs: Laura Filbert Zacher and Johanna Reed Adams

The committee was charged to work out details with a group in Nepal . The group has contacted the CDS to request becoming an affiliate chapter of the Society. Additional details are still needed, but the process has started to add Nepal as a new international chapter of the CDS.

Awards and Recognition
Chair: Pam Gibson

The awards committee presented a slate of award winners to the board of directors for approval. The list of award winners chosen by this year's committee was approved. The awards committee will contact the winners to give them information about the awards presentation at the Annual International Conference.

Communications
Co-Chairs: Connie Coley Loden and Steven Lease

The communications committee worked on transferring the online publications, Vanguard and CD Practice, to another host. Thanks to Richard Hayward, CDS member who is now hosting these resources in his area of Melbourne Australia . The committee continues to upload electronic copies of COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: The Journal of the Community Development Society to the members only section of the website. Login information can be obtained by emailing Lori@AssnOffices.com

Finance
Chair: Alan Kirk

The focus of the committee, the Endowment Fund had a balance $67,644.82 as of December 31, 2005 . The committee reported to the board that all of the contributions received this past year came from individual donations instead of larger chapter or organizational contributions. The committee has been working on finding a community foundation to place the Endowment fund with, in hopes of strengthening the fund. The committee is planning to hold another silent auction in St. Louis during the Annual International Conference.

International
Chair: Kathie Cram

The committee has been re-developed and continues to work on the terms of reference and their scope. The committee will focus on working with the local host in St. Louis for the upcoming conference on a breakfast for our international guests. In addition, the committee will be creating welcome kits for the international travelers to the CDS Conference.

Membership and Marketing
Chair: Jason Gray

The committee continues to focus on the marketing of the CDS conference as of the Society as a whole. The board discussed that this committee should always have co-chairmanship because of the amount of work on this committee.

Nominations and Leadership
Chair: Esther Farmer

The committee reviewed the slate of candidates with the board of directors. Official election ballots will be mailed in early April and candidates will be informed of the results no late than May 12 th .

Program
Chair: Randy Adams

The committee has completed the schedule of events for the Annual International Conference, June 25-28, 2006 in St. Louis , MO. The board was given first review of the conference brochure which will be sent to all CDS members. Guest keynote speakers include Mark Pinsky, Assistant Secretary Sandy Baruah, U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development and a wrap up session by Jabari Simama, VP of Community Development at St. Benedict College in South Carolina .

Site Selection
Chair: Linda Sunde

The Site Selection Committee has refined the old bid package used for potential conference locations to reflect current realities and forward it with the understanding that this is the first step in the negotiation process. This information is now posted on the CDS website under Future Conferences.
