(Adams Presidential Address Continued from Page 6)

CDS also needs to be more visible to the political establishment and perceived as a knowledgeable resource to provide them with an understanding of the processes which can strengthen the capacity of communities to reach thresholds, take-off points for self determination and interdependency towards sustainability.

Eight years ago when I took over the leadership of the Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP) network, I said, and it is again appropriate now in my new role as President of CDS, I feel like the French politician who when seeing the citizens storming the Bastille, yelled out, “Wait up so I can lead you!”  There is so much knowledge, skill, experience, and talent within this Society.  I will try to continue to provide the leadership of my predecessors and to continue to build upon the successes of the Society, but it is going to take your willingness to volunteer for the committees and task forces that run this Society, to recruit new members, and advocate for the profession.  We are in this together and no one can accomplish it alone.  If we believe in our mission, as I believe we do, we have to convince others of the value of our work as much as we value it ourselves.

In the name of my grandmother, Josephine Tratnik, who really should be standing here today instead of me, I accept the honor of representing CDS as its President for the coming year.  Thank you!

Randy Adams
